Researchers have shown that alterations occur in the brain during Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) treatment. As antidepressants are ineffective for about 40% of persons with serious depression, rTMS treatment is being used.

The patients were given one round of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) while they were within an MRI scanner, which allowed the researchers to see real-time alterations in the brain. It was observed that stimulating the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activated various other brain regions involved in a variety of processes, including controlling emotional reactions, memory, and motor control.

The individuals were then given another four weeks of rTMS treatment, and the researchers evaluated whether the active regions were linked to patients having reduced depressive symptoms after the completion of the treatment.

The activation of brain regions during concurrent rTMS-fMRI was found to be strongly connected to favourable outcomes, implying that these findings could be utilised to identify how well a patient is responding to rTMS therapies and also help treat a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders.

More research was needed to see if rTMS treatment may help people with early signs of Alzheimer′s disease improve their memory and if the rTMS brain activation patterns could be identified by changes in heart rate. The research findings were published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.
